impartial reviews and information about travel lodging and dinning in Vietnam,
but most of what I found was very much commercial advertising sites. These are

I love the Virtual Tourist site, it has heaps of great info and not too much in the way of advertising. I think it is among only a few in its niche, though, as you've found! The problem with that sort of site is that it depends on member reviews for its reputation, but needs to build a reputation before it will attract many member reviews. One of the conundrums of Web 2.0 ... the power of user-generated content, but not the reliability! Another link should certainly help Virtual Tourist, though. The only other thing I’d like to see on that site is some travel insurance advice - what to cover yourself for if you’re traveling to the area, etc.

The city’s most interesting places for tourists are all relatively close to each other, which makes it easy to enjoy the best parts of the city on foot or by cyclo. You could probably explore the Ancient Quarter and visit all the places below in a single day, but why rush?
